'The Founding Board' Entry #1: Welcome

Welcome to ‘The Founding Board’, a collection of musings from a bunch of dudes that just liked making jerky, and inexplicably found themselves running an actual company. Since this is our first entry, I should give you some background: this blog series will be an ongoing, behind-the-scenes account of our company’s history, as it’s made. Think of it like Serial, but for dried meat snacks.

Some of the content will focus on current developments here at HQ: updates on our successes, failures, opportunities and challenges. Some of it will be more thematic: for instance, on ‘communication’ or ‘managing cash flow.’ All of it will be transparent and honest, and will derive from actual ongoing issues.

Why do this?

Honestly – see, honesty! – because of Kickstarter. (A quick tangent on Kickstarter/Crowd-funding: The insane beauty of these sites is that, somehow, they successfully match the entrepreneurial ambitions of a vulnerable few (no matter how unusual) with the benevolence of an anonymous many. And while the Internet usually greets such vulnerability with venom and negativity, on Kickstarter it is rewarded with cash. It’s a fusion of charity & capitalism that defies explanation, and I’m proud to live in an era where a platform like this exists, let alone thrives.)

A little over 18 months ago, we raised $14,181 thanks to the crowd-funded generosity of 290 seriously awesome guys and gals. Without exaggeration, any success we ever have can be directly traced back to that campaign. In the literal sense, it provided enough working capital to print bags, place a bulk order, and launch an online business. But symbolically, it gave us a necessary push; it gave us validation. Moreover, we now had someone to whom we felt (and feel) accountable.

We have since been searching for a way to repay that generosity, and while we can’t refund the $14,181, we can pull back the curtain and allow any willing readers to share in this journey with us. On the spectrum of famed business literature, it will probably be more Scott than Welch; all we can hope is that our documented shenanigans will help another group of young entrepreneurs turn a weekend pastime into their weekday full-time. At the very least, we hope it’s interesting, entertaining, and stimulating.

We also hope it has a happy ending.

Things to do: Hillcrest Farmers Market

There are a million different ways you can while away the hours of a quiet Sunday morning, but when you live in San Diego or the surrounding area, the temperate climate affords you even more. One great way to get out and about and have a fun-filled Sunday is to head to one of the many farmer’s markets in the surrounding areas. There are markets open every day of the week, but Sunday offers a pair that are bustling with color, activity, and a host of local produce.

The Hillcrest Farmers Market is a fantastic place to spend a few hours on Sunday. Located in the heart of the School District, you can park for free and ride the now famous Market Trolley which will take you to a ton of local vendors just waiting to show off their wares. There is nothing like the smell and flavor of local produce, and at the Hillcrest Farmers Market you can also get tips on how to cook, thanks to the Chef Series that takes place throughout the year. You can literally head down to the market, pick up the ingredients you need, and then learn how to put them together into a fantastic meal. Use that skill to create a wonderful meal for you wife or girlfriend, which will show just how much of a True Gentleman you really are.

Just off of I-5 is the La Jolla Open Aire Market, which is also a great place to stop off for a Sunday visit. You will literally be amazed at the array of colors on display, with all of the items available for sale pulled from the fields and trees in the surrounding area. From the freshest avocados to the crispest carrots, everything you need for a healthy meal can be found growing in your own backyard.

Yes, we are aware that the items available at farmers markets are things that you can get at your local supermarket, but there is no fun in pushing a wonky-wheeled cart around an overcrowded store, where the owners don’t care about anything but the money you are about to spend. When you shop local, you are giving back to the community that you live in and ensuring that the farmers who toil so hard to bring you this wonderful produce can continue to do so for years to come. When you use the best ingredients to make something, you truly taste the difference.

It is that philosophy that is very much at the heart of True Gentleman’s Jerky. In the same way that farmer’s pass down their growing secretes through generations, we have stuck with the tried and true method of making jerky that has been in the family forever. The ingredients are crucial to the flavor and the smell, and we are convinced that both are better than any other jerky you can pull off the shelf in the big name supermarkets. We believe it takes a True Gentleman to respect the family traditions of years gone by, which is why we do things the way we do.

Cool Pool Party

Top Vegas Day Clubs 2013

As a few of the TG Jerky men get ready to embark on a journey to Sin City, it is wise to do one’s homework on the day party scene. Las Vegas pools are more than just a place to layout and catch some rays; they’re a whole club scene unto themselves. While seemingly every hotel has a pool for their guests, some hotels up the ante with dayclubs. Here is a rundown of the best dayclubs Vegas has to offer, and which were the best for the 2013 pool season.  And you better hurry, because the pool season ends after September.

Daylight Dayclub

The revolutionary Daylight has set a new standard for daytime party goers. It’s sexy, stylish pool décor makes it a hotbed for Vegas’ most beautiful visitors. With inspiration coming from the legendary party island of Ibiza in Spain, Daylight brings with it sophistication, high-energy, and world renowned DJ’s. Mandalay Bay.

Marquee Dayclub

This daytime extension of the famous Marquee nightclub features bright and vibrant décor accents. Spring for a Grand Cabana—each comes with an individual infinity dipping pool and flat screen TV, and the splurge will be well worth it. Year two of this club will feature some of the hottest house DJs in town, guaranteeing some unforgettable dance parties. The Cosmopolitan.

Wet Republic

If you want to party like a rock star, visit the place that has three pools, a huge menu of specialty cocktails, and a line that snakes out to its own private valet. Chill out with a signature Pomegranate Cooler or dive into the crystal-clear, 53,000-square-foot ultrapool. For celebrity-gazing and VIP service, book one of the lavish, stocked bungalows in a privately guarded area to lounge in and soak up the sun and sounds of some of the biggest DJ’s in the industry. MGM Grand.

Tao Beach

The Asian-inspired vibe at Tao Beach continues to reign supreme as a day-to-night hot spot. Buddha décor surrounds the beautiful crowd, and tall bamboo trees keep outsiders from peeking in. Delight in frozen Tao-tinis and scrumptious appetizers by day, and return at night to savor the same atmosphere under the stars. Amenities include sunglass cleaning and personal body misters. The Venetian
